Gold, platinum reach record high
Financial analysts say an emergency power crisis in South Africa pushed gold and platinum prices to an all-time record high.
Prices for the precious metals soared when South Africa's main mines closed Friday for lack of power in what government officials said was a national electricity emergency, The Financial Times reported Saturday.
South Africa's embattled state electricity company, Eskom, said the mines might remain closed for up to six weeks. That prospect pushed spot bullion in London to a record of $923.4 a troy ounce while platinum jumped to above $1,697 an ounce, the Times reported.
